New York Giants' 2024 Season: A Management-Driven Disaster

The 2024 NFL season for the New York Giants has become a nightmare from hell. The Giants suffered their sixth consecutive loss after getting embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers yesterday by a final score of 30-7. This game was very telling of where the Giants currently stand as a team. Yesterday's loss marks their sixth in a row and gives them a record of 2-9, which is currently tied for the worst in the league alongside the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 30-7 loss is the icing on the cake of what has been a week of extremely poor management. Well, let’s be honest. General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll have displayed poor management skills for well over one week, but this is a new low for them.

On November 18th, the Giants finally announced they were going to bench Daniel Jones, a move they should have made at least a month ago. Instead of starting Drew Lock, who has been Jones’s backup all season, they named third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito as the starter.

On November 19th, defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, who is arguably the most popular Giant among both fans and players, made an eyebrow-raising statement to the media regarding the benching, “He's the QB1. To me, the best quarterback on the team. But they see things differently. I guess that's all that matters."In response to that, Daboll kept his statement brief, “Everybody's going to have certain opinions.”

On November 20th, Drew Lock made a statement regarding his feelings towards not being named the starter when they benched Jones: "It was expressed to me that I was going to be the two [quarterback]. I don't know; it's an interesting situation.”

On November 21st, in a head-scratching move, Jones was working as a safety on the scout team, which was a bizarre and made no sense. Later that day, Jones requested a release from the Giants, which was granted the next day.

Now let's fast forward to post-game interviews after the Giants 30-7 loss yesterday.

Dexter Lawrence, who was visibly upset during the postgame, said, "We played soft, and they beat the s--- out of us today."

Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers added to that sentiment, calling the team “soft as f---." Nabers also expressed frustration at not being targeted in the first half, saying, “"Go out there first, second quarter, don't get the ball. Start getting targets at the end. I mean, I can't do that. Start getting the ball when it's 30-0. What do you want me to do?" A reporter followed that statement by asking why he did not receive any first-half targets. Nabers responded, “"I don't know. Talk to Daboll about that."

Linebacker Brian Burns called the Giants efforts on Sunday "ass”.

Offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor did not hold back with his thoughts post-game: "I personally don't think everyone's giving 100 percent. And I mean, you're 2-9; you have to be real with everyone. I'm 29 years old. I'm a vet in this league, and if anyone has a problem with me, say that they can come see me. But I think this franchise, these coaches, and these fans deserve way better. And like I said, there's a lot of people on this team giving everything they have. But it's not everyone."

The reason I have displayed this timeline and provided these quotes is because I think at this point, the next move for owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, should be to completely clean house. That means getting rid of Schoen and Daboll. Whether they want to keep offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen should be left up to whoever they hire to replace Schoen.

The main argument for keeping Schoen and Daboll for next season is because they never got to choose the quarterback they wanted for the offensive system they designed, since they inherited Daniel Jones when the two got hired in 2022.

That argument is irrelevant now, as the issue goes far beyond the field. The locker room is in shambles, and players have publicly taken subliminal shots at the coaching staff. I don’t care if you have the most talented roster in the world; when you have locker room problems, that trumps any on-paper talent.

The bottom line is the Giants have gone 18–28–1 (.394) during the Schoen/Daboll era, and they have completely lost the faith and trust of their players. The damage has been done, and there is no way to reverse it. In my mind, there is only one way to move forward, and that is a complete rebuild, starting with the exit of Schoen and Daboll.
