Revisiting the Mets' 7 Home Runs vs. Gerrit Cole This Season

The New York Mets routed the New York Yankees 12-3 yesterday to close out the final game of the 2024 Subway Series.

I'm not sure what amps me up more: the Mets sweeping the Yankees 4-0 for the first time since 2013, or how they absolutely dominated Yankees ace Gerrit Cole in his two starts against the Mets this season.

Cole, the 2023 Cy Young winner and ERA leader, has struggled this season since returning from an inflamed elbow injury; they kept him off the active roster for the first two months of the season. Through seven starts this season, Cole is 3-2 with a 5.40 ERA. This is a far cry from last season, where Cole finished 15-4 with a 2.63 ERA.

A large reason Cole has such a high ERA this season is because of the New York Mets. Cole has faced the Mets in two of his seven starts this season.

Cole made his second start of the season when he entered Citi Field back on June 25th. Cole imploded; in four innings he gave up six runs off seven hits while drawing four walks and not striking out a single batter.

Last night was more of the same struggles for Cole, who gave up six runs on eight hits while walking two batters and striking out four.

One stat I forgot to mention. Between both of his starts, Cole has given up SEVEN HOME RUNS to the New York Mets—that’s right, seven! Four of the Mets homers came on June 25th, while the other three were surrendered last night.

Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look.

Home Run #1 & #2:

Home run number one is brought to you by Mark Vientos, who hit a 382-foot shot to left center in the bottom of the 2nd.

In the same inning, Harrison Bader launched a 419-foot bomb to left field.

Home Run #3 & #4:

One home run on the day was not enough to satisfy Mark Vientos. So, he decided to hit another off Cole in the bottom of the 4th, a 385-foot shot to right center.

That same inning, Brandom Nimmo sent a 382-foot blast to right field.

Home Run #5:

Now onto last night's game. Where Tyron Taylor belted a 399-foot missile into left field.

Home Run #6 & #7:

The 2x home run Derby winner had to get involved eventually, and so he did. Pete Alonso nuked a 399-foot homer to left center in the top of the 4th.

One inning later, Francisco Lindor wanted to join the Gerrit Cole HR club, and he did so by smashing a 385-foot shot to right.

Closing Thoughts:

In the world of professional sports, the Mets often play second fiddle to the Yankees, who are celebrated not just as the best MLB franchise ever but arguably the greatest sports franchise period. That’s why, as a Mets fan, you have to savor the small victories, like sweeping a Subway Series or making last year’s AL Cy Young winner look like an amateur on the mound.
